To become employed as a medical assistant, you must be trained in medical assistant procedures in order to run a medical office smoothly. Employers will want to see that you have taken a medical assisting training course before they will consider hiring you.
MA's are trained to perform both clinical and administrative task, as the job will require both skills from you. Though task will vary from one employer to the other, your employer will expect administrative duties from you such as greeting patients, filling out patients medical records and setting up future appointments. They will also expect you to perform your clinical duties professionally. Such duties may include preparing an examination room with the needed supplies for the doctor or nurse, taking a patients medical history, suturing, drawing blood and any other small task that the doctor or nurse may ask of you to assist them.
Medical assistant classes are offered at most vocational schools and community colleges around the country and offer you a certificate of completion. The course to become a medical assistant is usually anywhere from 9 months to 1 year, depending on the school.
While in school you will learn many things to help you achieve the skills you need to become a medical assistant. Some of the things you will learn will be medical terminology, record keeping, the anatomy and administrative skills. Some other skills you will attain are how to administer medications and laboratory techniques. You will also get hands on training in drawing blood, giving TB shots and other various task on your fellow students; for many this can be the funnest part of the training.
Once you are done with your medical assistant schooling and have earned your medical assistant certificate, you can begin looking for employment. You can search for employment in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and clinical laboratories. The job outlook for MA's is growing as we have more and more elderly people living longer year after year. Of course it's not just the elderly who get sick and go see the doctor, with the human population growing in general, more and more MA's are becoming more in demand. This demanding need for trained MA's is one of the reasons why it seems to be the most advertised class out there. Most of the time when you see a television commercial from a vocational school you may have noticed that they will advertise their medical assistant class more than their other classes, there is a good reason for this.
Many work a long satisfying career as a medical assistant and sometimes work their way up to administrative management positions. For others, they will use medical assisting as an introduction to themselves in the medical field as they continue their education and pursue their other goals of becoming a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) or registered nurse (RN). It will really look great on someones resume when looking to be employed as a LVN or RN when an employer see that they have had years of experience working as a medical assistant.
